The entire camp, boys and girls, had been herded into the Leelanau School’s auditorium one summer evening, long ago in the Seventies. From hushed darkness, a slide show illumined the projection screen amid the most beautiful music I’d ever heard. Rich guitar strings blended in harmony and soothed my ears from the scars of heavy metal. As scenes of nature unfolded, their glory augmented by this soulful sound, I whispered into the darkness, “Who does this music?” My teenage friends only shrugged, equally entranced. At the time, my classical knowledge was limited to lively polkas by the Strauss family, (another story!) The answer, “Vivaldi”, came later, when a wise and cultured counselor, probably Linda, said, “That was Antonio Vivaldi’s concerto for guitar in G.” I have been a fan ever since.
